Ghosts of Demolition: HANO Housing Projects

A strange game you can play with Google Maps in New Orleans:

1. Find the site of a demolished HANO public housing complex in Satellite View, such as B.W. Cooper.

2. Hover over this empty site and find a spot you'd like to see in Google Street View.

3. Lo and behold: the site is no longer empty.

The HANO projects that were demolished post-Katrina -- St. Bernard, Lafitte, B.W. Cooper, Magnolia/C.J. Peete -- still appear in Google Street View today.

Google Street View showed the world what post-Katrina New Orleans was dealing with. We've come a long way since then, but Street View remains frozen in time. Most of the images in New Orleans were taken in 2007 – five years out of date in a city that is continuously changing, demolishing, and rebuilding.

Street View is one of the go-to ways for outsiders and locals to see an area, and its outdated data hurts local businesses, apartment hunters, landlords, and the general perception of the city. To highlight the changes that have taken place these past five years, we're using this site to juxtapose Street View screenshots and photographs of what the same spot really looks like today.
